When we were planning our move, my original plan was to move into and paint the entire house in the five days before I went back to work. That actually seems hilarious now, as it took six weeks, two holidays, a snowstorm, and my mom coming to visit twice for us to finally be finished. However, all the time it took was 100% worth it, and we are pleased with the money we saved by painting ourselves, even if I did spend countless hours on a ladder retouching the ceiling.
The living room was the first thing we painted – my mom actually painted and trimmed most of the living room, so I didn’t have to redo the ceiling! She is a DIY pro and probably has a lot to do with my confidence that we can do everything in the house ourselves. This is NOT my final plan for the living room – our couch and love seat don’t work in the space, so we’re planning to buy a new couch. I also want to recover the two wingback chairs pictured, and I have another chair and ottoman I want to recover and put in here with the new couch. All to come! You can see my plans for the living room here.
The blue we chose to cover all the green in the house is Sherwin Williams Icicle. We love it. It was a last minute decision in the parking lot of the Sherwin Williams store, but I am extremely pleased with it. Choosing blue instead of an off-white was Johnathon’s idea; I have to give him credit! It turned out great and I think it is a neutral with some flair.
This hallway is my favorite thing thing to show people when they ask how the house is coming along. The color truly transformed the space!
The kitchen is probably still my least-favorite room, but the blue made a big difference in here too. I’ll tackle the kitchen last, but I think a new backsplash and painting the cabinets will make this space a lot prettier.
I thought this stairwell was going to be exceedingly difficult the point where we would have to hire a professional painter. Long story short – it was exceedingly difficult, but we were able to do it ourselves.
Upstairs hallway – I love how the blue makes even the small spaces look bigger.
The guest bedroom turned out great! This is the most polished room in the house thus far, as this was our bedroom set in our previous condo. I made these curtains (and every other pair in the house), so check out how I made them here!
The guest bathroom – I was so glad to be rid of that pink! The guest bedroom and bathroom are both painted Sherwin Williams Crisp Blue.
We painted Johnathon’s office Sherwin Williams Online. It turned out nice and not too grey. Johnathon has loved decorating his office, and it is turning out great. I know he wants to get some larger bookshelves, and I want to make some black and white gingham curtains to give this office a warm hunting lodge feel.
A note on the paint colors – they are from the Sherwin Williams HGTV line at Lowes. We didn’t actually buy the paint at Lowes, but I did pick the colors there. The Sherwin Williams stores can easily mix those Lowes colors and the SW store paint is supposed to be better quality, so it worked out nicely.
Last but not least, the title – I did get paint on a few pairs of nice athletic leggings before digging old yoga pants out of a box. If the same happens to you, there is a fix! I used nail polish remover with acetone to remove the latex house paint with a cotton ball – just like you would with nail polish. It came off easily and then I just put the pants right in the wash. I have learned my lesson and won’t paint in lululemon or anything else nice again!
